For land clearing and other burns larger than a residential pile
A site inspection is required before you light — schedule it after applying
Piles no larger than 40 ft across, one pile at a time
Clear the ground around the pile to mineral earth — dirt, gravel, or rock — at least 4 ft in every direction
At least 100 ft from any structure, and 50 ft from any property line

If that equipment cannot be on site, you may instead keep two full five-gallon buckets of water and a shovel — but then piles are capped at 5 ft across.

Burn hours follow the fire danger level. LOW: any time of day, while attended. MODERATE: 6 am to noon, and the fire must be completely out by noon. HIGH, or any declared burn ban: no burning at all.

Do not burn paper, cardboard, garbage, plastics, rubber, asphalt, paint, painted or treated lumber, petroleum products, dead animals, or anything that gives off black smoke or an offensive odor. Hazardous material poured onto or mixed into the debris is prohibited.

Keep the signed permit on site — the permit is not valid without it. This permit runs 30 days, and the Fire Marshal can end it early by burn ban or revocation. No commercial burning after Jun 1, 2027, and none in an Urban Growth Area. If the fire escapes, you are responsible for suppression costs and damage (RCW 52.12). Burning in violation of the permit can be fined under the Washington Clean Air Act (RCW 70.94).

Commercial Burn Permit
